Dog Scared of the Vacuum? How to Help Your Dog Feel Safe

Published Jan 29, 2025

If you were little, you’d probably be scared of such a big noisy machine too. In the following video I am training my puppy Adley to accept that the vacuum is no big deal.

Why is my dog scared of the vacuum?

Dogs may be scared of the vacuum because it is loud, moves unpredictably, and can seem threatening or unfamiliar. You can help your dog become more comfortable by introducing the vacuum gradually and pairing calm exposure with positive reinforcement.

The process works through a number of steps.

  1. Start the training by leaving the vacuum in the room for a few days, and reward the puppy for looking at it, then smelling it, and lastly not caring about it. It’s just a thing in the room.

  2. With the vacuum off, move it around, and reward the puppy (click and treat) for just calmly hanging out.

  3. With the vacuum on, but not moving, again reward the puppy for just chilling.

  4. Finally, with the vacuum on, and moving, reward for being a chill puppy.

  5. If at any point the puppy is showing stress, stop, take a break, and start again, but at a previous step. Repeat steps 3 and 4 a few times over a couple of weeks to reinforce the idea that the vacuum is something that equals treats. As training progresses, start reducing the amount of treats, until vacuuming just becomes a normal part of life.

  6. In the video you will notice Huxley, my big boy, has no issues with the vacuum. He’s 2 years old and has learned the vacuum game. He was rewarded for hearing the vacuum and now just gets treats because he is helping me teach Adley that the vacuum isn’t a big deal. Good job buddy!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my dog to stop being scared of the vacuum?

Introduce the vacuum gradually at a level your dog can comfortably handle. Start with the vacuum turned off and stationary, reward calm behavior, then progress to moving it while off, turning it on while stationary, and eventually using it normally.

How do I desensitize my dog to the vacuum?

Start by leaving the vacuum in the room while it is turned off and reward your dog for calmly noticing or investigating it. Gradually introduce movement and sound while rewarding calm behavior. If your dog becomes stressed, increase the distance or return to an easier step.

Why is my puppy afraid of the vacuum cleaner?

A vacuum can be especially intimidating to a puppy because it is large, noisy, and moves in unfamiliar ways. Puppies are still learning which things in their environment are safe, so gradual positive experiences can help them become more comfortable with the vacuum.

Should I use treats when my dog is scared of the vacuum?

Treats can help create a positive association with the vacuum and reward calm behavior. Work at a distance and intensity where your dog is comfortable enough to eat and avoid forcing your dog closer to the vacuum.

What should I do if my dog gets stressed during vacuum training?

Stop or reduce the intensity of the exercise if your dog shows signs of stress. Give your dog more distance from the vacuum or return to an earlier training step where they were comfortable before gradually progressing again.

How long does it take to get a dog used to the vacuum?

Every dog is different, so there is no fixed timeline. Some dogs may become comfortable relatively quickly, while others need gradual practice over days or weeks. Progress at your dog's pace rather than rushing through the training steps.
